NORTEXCEL2020 is the response of the Norte region to the call “WIDESPREAD 1-2014: Teaming” for creating or upgrading centres of excellence, building on partnerships between leading scientific institutions in Europe and low performing countries and regions, in terms of research and innovation performance.
This initiative is sponsored and coordinated by the Norte Regional Authority (CCDR-N) and comes as a direct follow-up to the region’s Smart Specialization Strategy, being born from the entrepreneurial discovery process at the origin of the RIS3, and intended to build on and expand the specialization paths selected for the region, that will be supported under the new regional Operational Programme.
In this Teaming opportunity that follows a two-phase model defined by the European Commission, Phase 1 was implemented over a 12 months period, whose main goal was to develop an comprehensive and robust Business Plan to demonstrate the potential of the future Centre of Excellence, including commitments from regional authorities.
In TEAMING Phase 1 we set as main objective for NORTEXCEL2020 project that of making Norte one of the top 100 European regions in terms of research and innovation performance by 2020, building on the regional assets and the lessons learned from our international partner Joanneum Research. Today, after the closing of Phase 1, it is possible to identify significant advances that have already been achieved in the implementation of the new centre of excellence.
