NORTEXCEL is a not for profit association under the Portuguese law created in November 2015 to host the new Centre of Excellence on medical technologies in the Norte region of Portugal.
The centre of excellence proposes a singular model as an ‘innovation company’ (inspired by our international partner Joanneum Research), with a key role in transferring technology and know-how in Norte region. The new centre will act as an interface institution between the scientific community, business fabric, industry, entrepreneurship, start-up communities and public sector in order to build synergies and bridges of cooperation and contribute to the articulation and coordination of research activities efforts and, thus, increase the competitiveness and business potential of regional actors.
Polytechnic of Porto occupies the first position in the ranking of polytechnics and is placed in the upper segments of the national higher education ranking.

NORTEXCEL already mobilized close to 20 members from high-level research & innovation organizations, advanced users and companies that will contribute to this initiative.

NORTEXCEL starts where the other institutions usually stop, developing a highly specialized unit in applied research and technology transfer, improving cooperation levels across the innovation system and optimizing the use of resources. The centre of excellence has 4 core areas of activity to fulfill its mission. There are 3 main cross cutting R&D+I groups on cancer, cardio and care, gathering high level knowledge in advanced materials, medical technologies and ICT.
